Mexico - North Korea friendly

Mexico beat North Korea

TORREON, Mexico (AP)—Javier Hernandez scored the winning goal in the 69th minute to lift Mexico to a 2-1 victory over North Korea in an international friendly Wednesday.

Cuauhtemoc Blanco gave Mexico a 1-0 lead in the 51st minute, scoring on a perfectly directed, 20-meter (yard) free kick in the match between two teams headed to this year’s World Cup.

North Korea equalized in the 57th when Choe Kum Chol scored from a left-footed, bouncing shot that was poorly played by Mexico keeper Guillermo Ochoa.

Mexico used the match to try out uncapped players with Blanco and goalkeeper Ochoa among only a handful of players for Mexico sure of inclusion in the World Cup squad.

South Africa denies World Cup labourer report

Football officials today denied reports that North Korean labourers were working on football stadiums across South Africa in preparation for the World Cup.

South Korea’s JoongAng Ilbo newspaper reported yesterday that about 1,000 construction workers from reclusive North Korea, which maintains strict control on its citizens’ travels, have been sent to help build and renovate stadiums across South Africa.

World Cup officials and construction firms in South Africa today dismissed the South Korean newspaper report as “groundless”, saying not a single North Korean worker was involved, according to South Korea’s Yonhap news agency.

North Korea drew Venezuela

CARACAS, Venezuela (AP)—World Cup qualifier North Korea, wearing borrowed uniforms, played a 1-1 draw with Venezuela on Thursday in a friendly that was ended after 80 minutes due to darkness.

North Korean defender Pak Nam Chol gave the Koreans a 1-0 lead in the seventh minute, with Angelo Pena equalizing in the 43rd.

The match began two hours late after the North Koreans declined to play in the middle of the afternoon when temperatures reached 36C (97F) in the small city of San Felipe in the northwest of the country.

In additon to the delay in starting the match, the North Koreans said their uniforms were lost in transit, forcing them to wear a kit borrowed from Venezuela’s national team.
