EAFF Women : DPR Korea 1-0 Korea Rep

DPR KOREA 1 (Kim Yun-mi 18’)

KOREA REPUBLIC 0

When the draw for the 2018 AFC Women’s Asian Cup was made in Jordan on Saturday, DPR Korea were the most notable absentees, having failed to qualify in April.

On that occasion they finished second in their group behind Korea Republic after a spirited and crucial 1-1 draw in Pyongyang, but Kim Kwang-min’s team gained a measure of revenge with a 1-0 win in Chiba, which puts them on the top of the standings with one match remaining.

Kim Yun-mi, the two-goal hero against China on Friday, was on the scoresheet again, latching onto Ri Hyang-sim’s cross from the right flank to expertly steer a header into the far bottom corner in the 18th minute.

The result continues Korea Republic’s barren run against their neighbours, with their most recent victory over DPR Korea coming back in 2005.

A draw against Japan on Friday will be enough for DPR Korea to claim a third successive title, while Korea Republic – who are missing overseas-based players such as Chelsea’s Ji So-yun – will play for third place against China.
