Chengdu: Australia won the AFC Women's Asian Cup for the first time in their history on Sunday after beating DPR Korea 6-5 on penalties following a tense 1-1 draw at Chengdu Sports Centre.
The Matildas took the lead in the 18th minute through Sam Kerr but defending champions DPR Korea equalised in the 72nd minute through Jo Yun-mi to send the game to extra time.
And after 120 minutes could not separate the two sides, Yu Song-mi's missed spot kick proved crucial with Australia 100% from 12 yards in the shootout.
